The Silver Peso is finishing its updates and reopening in May. But did you know, just a block away was Larkspur’s original saloon, Gus Frizzi’s Exchange?

Old photo of Gus Frizzi's Exchange—Southwest corner of Magnolia Avenue and Ward Street, c. 1906. Courtesy of Larkspur Heritage Committee.

It opened in 1890 on the corner of Magnolia Avenue and Ward Street, where Coquelicot is currently located. Many bars were called “Exchange” then, implying a place where money, news, mail, and stories were swapped.

The Frizzi family were influential in Larkspur, one of the founding families that owned land right across from the train station. Gus’s wife Julia would establish a bakery next door in 1894. Sounds wholesome, but Larkspur was considered a rough and rowdy railroad town and even nicknamed “naughty town” as a getaway for San Franciscans.

The prohibition ended the saloon, however, the building would go on to house many other businesses over the years, first converting into a soda fountain. The five foot gap between the two buildings was also converted to the smallest storefront in Marin (and soon home to a new business).

One of their sons, Willie Frizzi, is remembered well by today’s long-time Larkspur residents. He was always walking around town, well into the 1970s. This fire department history book describes him as “the town character.”

Willie was also instrumental in the Rose Bowl dance Larkspur is bringing back for the first time in 17 years. I don’t know if the firefall will be a part of it though…

Molly Tuttle and Toad the Wet Sprocket at Hopmonk Novato

These tickets just went on sale Friday and both are expected to sell out fast. Molly Tuttle won back-to-back Grammys for best bluegrass album and is coming on Thursday, July 16. Toad is a big ‘90s band coming back on Friday, October 9 (they sold out the Hopmonk show last year).

This is an off-Broadway comedy staged as a wedding. You don’t just watch the show, you participate as members of the family or friends of the bride and groom. Sounds like a unique experience so grab the premium $198 tickets soon (includes dinner, show, and 1 drink — last summer’s performance sold out).

Because leaving Marin might take more planning. Look for our Marin events in the Wednesday email.

Grab your commemorative wine glass and a wristband, then proceed to unlimited tastes. Great music and food. $68.

The Flamingo resort is mid-century modern with a pool and poolside restaurant. You have to stay there for kids to access the pool (they have Saturday night only for ~$400), but it looks like it will hit 80 degrees in Santa Rosa and could be a quick getaway. They also have an indoor Mother’s Day brunch.

There’s a 100+ year-old steam powered sawmill that still works! They host demonstrations four weekends a year, including this weekend. Looks interesting for history buffs and gearheads.

All three weeks sold out fast, but someone just had to cancel their tickets for Wednesday’s event. So two tickets are available if you act fast. Stay tuned for an announcement about our next series of classes.

The forecast is 72 degrees and sunny, this is setting up to be a perfect day. The $20 early-bird tickets will likely sell out today, buy early to save.

Meet your interesting and fun Marin neighbors. I’m really hoping the Silver Peso is open by then to host our afterparty meetup…

$1.95M Modern Hillside Home in Fairfax

This is an impressive design and craftsmanship. The first floor is basically all windows! It’s an interesting open floor layout with fireplace in the middle of the room. Nice landscaping and deck to enjoy the view.

Combine that with the view and Ross Valley School District, I don’t know if I’ve seen anything quite like this at under two million dollars.

It was built in 1955 and sold in 2024 for $650k. They must have torn it down to the studs in a full gut remodel. I wonder if they just finished and no one has even lived in it since?

I’m sold! That probably means this could go much higher than the asking price. What do you think?
