“I’d rather be lucky than good” first attributed to Lefty Gomez

Lefty Gomez was a star pitcher for the Yankees during their heyday in the 1930s.

He joined the team in 1930, while Babe Ruth was still in his prime and in the midst of leading the league in home runs 12 out of 14 years straight. They won a World Series together in 1932.

Lefty’s early career (his actual first name was Vernon) was actually with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League (the premier spot for West Coast baseball). About 5 years later, the now famous Joe DiMaggio joined the Seals, then moved on to Yankees soon after as well. They would go on to win four straight World Series championships together from 1936 to 1939.

After retiring, Lefty Gomez lived in Fairfax and Novato for decades and passed away at Marin General in 1989. There are baseball fields named after him at White Hill Middle School in Fairfax and San Marin High School in Novato.

He was famous for his personality and storytelling of the golden era of baseball. Several recordings can be found online, and this article does a great job extracting some amazing quotes.

[Random aside: I should be more grateful for my extremely expensive modern healthcare. Lefty was too skinny, so according to the Lefty Gomez Wikipedia page, “Following a common medical strategy of the time, the team had most of his teeth extracted; they also had him drink 3 US quarts of milk daily.”]

An entertainers’ paradise for $2.7M

Let’s keep it in Novato + sports for this week’s featured property.

This one is right on the golf course at Marin Country Club. It’s not just anywhere on the course — you can see the clubhouse and get there by walking across the 9th fairway!

There’s a huge enclosed atrium that leads out to the pool. For $2.7M you’re getting a house that needs extensive updates, but it is set on 2 flat acres and isn’t a tear-down. Envision California indoor-outdoor living at its finest.
