Simply Said at The Lark on April 21st

SIMPLY SAID, modeled after the Moth Radio Hour, showcases storytelling on stage at the Lark Theater, hosted by author/actor and storytelling teacher Corey Rosen. Each show features both experienced storytellers and opportunities for audience members to put their name in the hat to tell their own story based on a monthly theme. Hear tales of bold moves, confronting fears, and dicey decisions. Share your story or simply enjoy as part of the audience. Stories are spoken aloud (without notes) about something you have experienced personally.

Why storytelling? Humans tell stories; it’s our native language!

A 19 year-old musician arrived in Sausalito in 1977 to record his first studio album. This kid was different: he arrived every day in a sharp suit, carrying a briefcase.

Prince walked into Studio B of the Record Plant and poured his heart into the album For You. He famously played all 27 instruments on the album himself!

The story of how Prince ended up in Sausalito begins with a busted soundboard. Sessions for his debut record had initially been booked at Sound 80 Studios in Minneapolis, but the studio had just swapped in a new mixing board that hadn't broken in yet. When Warner Bros. executive producer Tommy Vicari suggested relocating to Los Angeles, Prince's manager Owen Husney said no. He didn't want the teenage prodigy swallowed up by the industry machinery of L.A. Instead, Husney chose the Record Plant in Sausalito — quiet, remote, and already hallowed ground for the artists Prince idolized. Fleetwood Mac had recently recorded Rumours there. Sly Stone had his own dedicated space in the building, a sunken control room called The Pit with a lounge chair shaped like a giant velvet tongue. Carlos Santana was a fixture.

The 5’2” man had a presence. The youngest person to ever produce a Warner Bros. album had a musical vision that could not be swayed. Literally every sound on the album was created by him, lead vocals, backing vocals, guitar, synthesizers, piano, glockenspiel, cymbals, handclaps, snaps, drums, and more. The first track alone had 46 vocal lines.

Jazz bassist Tony Saunders, recording across the hall in Studio A, remembered the first time the sound drifted through the wall. "At first we were, like, cracking up — 'Who's this little guy in the suit?'" Saunders recalled. "Until we heard the music. And then we were like, 'Oh, my God.'" Late nights often ended with Prince and Sly Stone jamming together with Saunders and a few others. "Him and Prince had that bond," Saunders said. "That genius bond."

The album only had modest success, but the seeds of something extraordinary had been planted in a funky wooden studio in Sausalito. Several years later Prince was joined by his band the Revolution and they released the album and film Purple Rain in 1984.
