The Gold Rush was a wild dash to get to the gold fields and strike your fortune. People came from all over the world. Ships were just abandoned in the San Francisco harbor and the entire crew rushed up into the hills with everyone else.

One man took a discarded item and set up a million dollar per year business in Marin. This is the story of Samueel P. Taylor’s paper mill in Lagunitas.

The Pioneer Paper Mill was established in 1856 and the first of its kind on the West Coast. Contrary to what you might think, most paper at the time was not made from wood pulp. They took used rags, rope, and burlap and recycled it into paper.

Samuel P. Taylor’s business consumed about a ton of recycled raw material per day, producing nearly a ton of paper. They employed about twenty men, many of whom were Chinese laborers, and sold over a million dollars of paper products per year at their peak.

One thing that was unique about this paper coming from Marin? It’s yellow manila color.

In the Eastern United States, paper was made from fresh cotton or linen rags and could be bleached white. However, Taylor’s mill used Manila hemp shipping ropes (from a banana species in the Philippines). He developed a process to clean and break down these tough ropes and turn them into strong paper.

Today paper is made by entirely different processes, but the influence of Samuel P. Taylor remains. A manila envelope denotes a strong, sturdy paper, even though it could have been made white by today’s technology.

Pogi Burgelman is a 4-year-old Labrador whose name means “handsome” in Tagalog. With a Belgian surname and a heart of gold, he’s everyone’s best friend—whether they asked for it or not!

This lighthouse actually has a full bathroom downstairs and bedroom upstairs. 196 square feet (someone had to dust off their geometry to figure out the area of an octagon).

Plus there is another detached 1 bed, 1 bath unit in addition to the main house that is two bedrooms with 1,720 square feet.

It features an intriguing write-up as well: “Owned by a name you know, steeped in story, and almost certain never to hit the market again.”
