Friday, October 30

Mill Valley has a full evening of family fun. Carve pumpkins, hear stories, and take a nighttime nature hike through Fernwood Cemetery in Tam Junction at Spooky Night at the Cabin (5pm). Trick-or-treat through Harry Potter- and Ghostbusters-themed zones and a glow-in-the-dark tunnel at Scary at the Berry at Strawberry Recreation District (5-8pm). Or head to Halloween at the Center at the Mill Valley Community Center for Trunk or Treat (4-6pm) and a magic show (6:15pm, $12 in advance).

For older kids and thrill-seekers, Halloween Headlamp Climbing at Gravity Vault offers free trick-or-treat try-a-climbs (6-9pm), plus lights-out headlamp climbing, a costume contest, and a glowstick grab (6-10pm, $14 day pass). And the Novato Horsemen Haunted House, Marin’s actually scary haunted house, closes out its three-night run at 7pm ($8).

Halloween Related Options

Early in the day there’s trick-or-treat along Grant Avenue at Downtown Novato Safe Trick or Treat (11am-2pm). A costume parade at Marin Country Mart in Larkspur (11am-2pm). A family costume parade (11am) and pet costume parade (noon) at Bon Air’s Halloween Bash in Greenbrae. Plus more costumed pups at Fieldwork’s Doggoween at Town Center Corte Madera (12-2pm).

Fairfax and Sausalito have some of the best large-scale family options. The Halloween Parade and Haunted Grove in Fairfax starts at 5pm at the Fairfax Theater, with a costume contest at Bolinas Park and trick-or-treating at downtown businesses. In Sausalito, the Halloween Parade starts at 6pm from the firehouse, followed by a dog costume contest at 6:30pm.

There are plenty of late night options for adults too. Dance to Pop Fiction at the Halloween Dance Party at the San Rafael Elks Lodge (7-11:55pm, $28 with code BUZZ), head to the Sweetwater in Mill Valley for the Soul Ska Halloween Party with DJ Troubleman (8pm, $42), or check out parties at The Bungalow Kitchen in Tiburon, and the Corner Bar in Mill Valley.

A 1.5-hour stroll through a historic cemetery, with stories of Marin’s pioneer families, local legends, and notorious figures, including San Quentin inmates. 10am, $10 cash.

Sunday, November 1

Aztec dancers perform at Imagination Park in honor of the departed, then lead a procession down the street to Taco Jane’s, home to a community altar where anyone can add a photo of a loved one. 1pm, free.

Catch the “Ameri-Cali Soul” band in a setting you don’t see every day: an afternoon set at Karl The Store, one of Sausalito’s cooler shops. 1-4pm, free.

Kayak Tomales Bay with a guide in the morning, then join the bestselling California artist and naturalist behind the California Field Atlas at Straus Home Ranch for a talk, Q&A, and book signing. $145 for both or $40 for the talk only.

Erich von Stroheim’s 1919 alpine thriller Blind Husbands screens at the California Alpine Club lodge on Mt. Tam with live piano from Tony-nominated composer Wayne Barker. Von Stroheim worked as a day laborer at the West Point Inn, and the time he spent there inspired this love triangle at a mountain resort that ends with a showdown on a peak. It’s a fundraiser for the Inn. 4:30pm or 7pm, $30, BYOB.

Monday, November 2

Dress as a flapper or bootlegger and try to crack a Roaring Twenties whodunit in the library’s Founders Room, with light refreshments and prizes for best dressed. 5:30-7:30pm, grab one of the final 13 seats.

Restaurant of the Week

Angela’s has been scooping on Throckmorton in downtown Mill Valley for just over two years, but I only recently learned the story behind it.

It started in Petaluma as Lala’s Creamery, an old-fashioned ice cream parlor on Petaluma Boulevard that opened in 2009 and made its ice cream in small batches from local ingredients.

In 2017, Angela Pryor Garat and her son, Ignacio “Iggy” Garat, bought the business and its recipes and renamed it after Angela. The family is from Argentina, and food is in their blood: Iggy’s grandparents helped bring McDonald’s to Argentina, and he also owns Iggy’s Organic Burgers. Iggy now runs the company with his sister. Angela’s has grown from one shop to eight across Sonoma, Marin, and San Francisco counties.

The ice cream is still made in small batches on an organic base. Iggy has said they buy about 75% of their ingredients locally, from the milk down to the salt, which comes from Bodega Bay. There are around 30 flavors, including a good run of vegan ones, plus sundaes, shakes, and cookies and brownies baked from scratch. I have some new ones to try after reading these comments.
