After a crazy early October heat wave, you might be glad to know the high temps are finally falling to the upper 60s this weekend. Here are some events to go check out.

Friday, October 9
Who saw Robert Plant in Golden Gate Park last weekend? This all-female Led Zeppelin tribute band is returning to the Sweetwater. The show is 8pm, $40.
Bring the costumes your kids have outgrown to Pickleweed Park or come grab one. You can also drop off at other locations through Thursday. Then stick around for the movie in the park, Toy Story 5 in Spanish. 4-6pm, free. (Mill Valley and Novato options too.)
All Weekend Long
Novato’s 30th annual downtown car show. Starts Friday at 5:15pm with a police-escorted cruise, then Saturday 10am-4pm seven blocks of Grant Avenue are closed for perusing. Don’t miss the rockabilly band Mitch Polzak & The Royal Deuces Saturday at 1pm. Free.

Saturday, October 10
Right in the town where mountain biking was born, this is the 20th annual celebration. There are morning group rides, a kids' bike rodeo, 24+ breweries, and live music. Plus a 50th anniversary celebration of Repack in the afternoon: klunkers, jeans, and garden gloves encouraged. 9am-6pm, free entry, $45 for beer tasting (purchased in advance), and proceeds go to trail work.

Menke Park fills with local beer, food trucks, and live music for a family-friendly Oktoberfest, with proceeds going to town beautification projects. Noon-5pm, $35 for five beer tastes ($15 for non-drinkers, kids under 12 are free).
Two-time Grammy-winning violinist Mads Tolling (who also played in a Bob Weir band, Wolf Bros) teams up with Italian fingerstyle legend Peppino D'Agostino, whom Guitar Player named one of the 50 best acoustic guitarists of all time. 8pm at the Throckmorton, $38-50.
Also a great party: Marin Buzz’s Sausalito Music History Party (just 30 tickets remain)
And guided hikes on new trails: King Mountain Preserve in Kentfield, Red Hill in San Anselmo
Sunday, October 11
Cavallo Point is one of the best locations to watch the Blue Angels rip past the Golden Gate Bridge. The Fort Baker lawn will host a BBQ and live music. Kids get their own menu and a kite to fly. Noon-3pm, $85 for adults, $30 for kids. (The air show runs noon-4pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.)
A full day at Pantoll with 15+ sessions for kids and adults, including experts in raptors, geology, prescribed burns, and astronomy. 7:30am-9pm, register to individual sessions on Eventbrite. Includes Hillary Colyer, who is a social media celebrity to me. Sold out: tour of the East Peak Fire Lookout (but you can sign up as a volunteer).
Get Your Shop On
There are estate sales in Mill Valley (with an old airplane propeller), Novato (vintage Levi’s jacket), and San Rafael (back again, now 50% off). Plus the French Market in San Rafael and the Makers Market at Mill Valley Lumber Yard.

When you step through the curtain, you’re transported to a neighborhood restaurant in Japan with about 27 seats. Head up Miracle Mile, and just past Phyllis’ Giant Burgers, there’s a tiny strip mall. There you’ll find one of Marin’s hidden gems, nestled between a smoke shop and a nail spa. MaruJun opened a year and a half ago and serves authentic Japanese cuisine.
Owner Jun Takeda is from northern Kyushu and spent three decades at the recently closed Sushi To Dai For. MaruJun focuses on traditional sushi, with a short list of rolls, but nigiri and sashimi are the stars. You won’t find an Americanized cream cheese Philly roll or spicy mayo-topped dragon rolls here.
Most of the fish is flown in from Japan’s Toyosu Market, plus local catch like halibut and regional king salmon. Also don’t overlook the chicken: Kyushu cuisine is known to feature it more than other regions of Japan. Try one of the grilled chicken skewers, or the miso nasu, which gets rave reviews. Judge it by the strip mall and you’ll miss one of the best meals in Marin.

Finbar is a handsome husky/shepherd mix adopted from Marin Humane on May 11, 2019 at approximately 1 1/2 years old.
