Marin Buzz Year in Review and Request for Help

We love supporting Marin small businesses and appreciate all the support we’ve received from you! This first year of Marin Buzz has been an incredible ride and we have big plans for 2026, including more in-person gatherings. It is hard to believe that in less than a year we have gone from just an idea about how to help you get the most out of beautiful Marin County to over 6,200 email subscribers and 11,000 Instagram followers.

The next phase for Marin Buzz is to build out the business more and this is where we could use your help. We have had some wonderful sponsors and aim to fill our ad slots without taking away from the reader experience (there are only 10 spots total and this won’t increase). If you know any business owners who advertise locally, I’m sure they’ll find Marin Buzz a great deal. We have found high-ticket services perform well and would welcome an introduction to anyone in these categories: medspas, accountants, legal firms, local banks, retirement homes, HVAC, insurance, orthodontists, and more. Thank you for any introductions, just reply to this email.

Also, we’ll be making our first part-time hire in January. We seek out someone who can work about 2 hours per day on social media and keeping everything organized. Let me know if you are interested in learning more.

Minds were blown a couple weeks ago when we shared Marin’s tie to the Pearl Harbor attack. So today we are going to feature more interesting facts about the Hamilton Field Air Force Base that was in Novato:

  • In 1932, Marin County sold the 927-acre site to the U.S. Army for just $1, a move designed to bring federal construction jobs to Novato during the Great Depression.

  • The base was named after 1st Lieutenant Lloyd Andrews Hamilton, a Marin County native and WWI flying ace who was killed in action in 1918.

  • Designed in the Spanish Eclectic style with red tile roofs and stucco, the base was known as the "Country Club of the Air Corps."

  • Originally built for bombers, by 1940 the runways were considered too short or inadequate for routine operations with the new massive B-17 Flying Fortress (even though those departed from Hamilton to Pearl Harbor in December 1941). So it switched to primarily fighters including this P-39:

  • The former runway, which once sat below sea level, was flooded in 2014 to create 648 acres of tidal wetlands using mud dredged from the Port of Oakland.

  • Perhaps you spotted it in the film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom?

  • The base hospital is currently as a luxury senior living community called Elegance at Novato.

  • The massive hangars are mostly now offices, including hosting a Disney affiliated animation company, Image Movers Digital, and 2K Games (a video game maker).

  • Famous births at Hamilton Air Force Base: Lester Holt of NBC Dateline fame and Jon Miller of Giants play-by-play fame.

The Difference of $2.1M in Kentfield

Two homes for sale on cul-de-sacs in Kentfield. They are just a few houses away from each other, although you have to walk all the way around:

But I find the differences fascinating. First, one is $4M and the other $1.9M. They are close enough to the same size (2,525 sq ft vs 2,247) although one is a 4/3 (bed/bath) and the other 3/2.5.

However, 9 Fay Drive has incredible details: “bespoke design by Berry Design Works graces every aspect of this just completed renovation.” It looks like this was a flip, purchased for $2.45M just two months ago, they did a fast renovation, listed it at $4.6M, then quickly lowered it to $4M. It is beautiful, on a large lot with views of Mt. Tam.

In comparison, 16 Edna Court seems like a deal. Practically the same location and schools for half the price! It is fully move-in ready, no upgrades needed. The yard is much smaller, but private and solid enough for California.

Which would you rather have?
