Another beautiful weekend coming up, here are some of the top events in Marin.
All Weekend
This is the penultimate weekend for the rink on the little circular island in the lagoon by the Civic Center. DJ nights Friday, Saturday, Sunday are Cowboys vs. Aliens, Star Wars and space themed. BYOS (skates) or $5 rentals.
The best cat videos of the year, shown on the big screen. Proceeds go to local cat rescue.
It’s back again at the large Marin Center Exhibition Hall. $7, free for kids under 12 or seniors over 70.
Book Passage is hosting a travel-writing conference with some individually ticketed talks. Photographers, authors, actors — see if anything looks interesting.
Friday, August 7
This annual festival is headlined by the band Neon Velvet. Local vendors, salsa dance lessons, and more. 5-9pm, free admission.
Fire trucks and police cars will be on site for kids to check out. Soul Ska is also performing at Creek Park. 6-8:30pm, free.
This is the first one of the year at the Cabin. Acoustic music under the redwoods featuring Fog City Swampers. 5-7:30pm, free.

Saturday, August 8
Head on out to West Marin for this fair that’s in its 80th year. There’s a pancake breakfast at 8am, but the fair mostly runs 10am-2pm. Free admission.
This annual event at the Red Hill Shopping Center is back. 10am-1pm, free entry.
This is a dirt/gravel cycling event with several distance variations. $160 for adults, $110 for kids.

Sunday, August 9
This is another exciting band for the Corte Madera outdoor concert series, due in part to an electric ukulele. 5-6:30pm, free.
Series still going: The French Market in San Rafael, Belvedere Concerts in the Park
This is a family-owned grocery store at the northern end of San Rafael. They have an excellent sandwich counter, but a while back someone told me they travel nearly 30 minutes to buy the marinated meat. So we picked up some chicken recently and were impressed.
They provide lunch options for nearby summer camps, but that’s coming to an end. And since construction just started on 124 units of low-income housing on both sides of it, Marinwood Market might have a little less foot traffic until the move-in date. So drop by some time!
