Marin’s 420 Claim to Fame + Dream Property Alert

Marin history and our Zillow listing of the week

The San Rafael High School statue that served as the meet up spot for the original 420

Did you know the term "420" was invented right here in Marin?

Yep, it all started with a group of San Rafael High School students back in 1971. There were five friends, nicknamed "The Waldos" because they hung out by a wall (aren’t high school nicknames amazing?).

They would meet regularly after school — at exactly 4:20 pm — to smoke weed and search for a hidden cannabis garden. Their meetup spot? A statue of Louis Pasteur on campus. Saying "420" became their secret code to remind each other of their after-school plans without teachers catching on. Little did they know, their inside joke would spread far beyond Marin, becoming global slang for marijuana culture.

So this Sunday, April 20th at 4:20 pm, impress your friends by dropping this bit of Marin trivia!

200 Road To Ranches, Nicasio, CA 94946

Private mini lake and dock

A West Marin compound for $3.85M that has it all! The main house is fairly standard with a wraparound porch. But the real appeal is the 75 acres with:

  • 4 other "living units"

  • Horses: A huge barn and covered riding area, "within a 2-hour horse ride to the Pacific Ocean"

  • Wine: 14-acre high-quality Pinot Noir vineyard

  • Water: 11-acre reservoir with a dock and 2 wells

Sounds like a good price to me! Not that I have that kind of money… but I always wonder what income it could bring in to offset the price. For example, renting out the vineyard or even selling it. Or turning it into a wedding venue — barn weddings are still in, right? Who wants to go in on this (and supply all the money)?

Thanks for reading. We will be back with the regular events and activities email Wednesday morning!
