Imagine recording your music in the comfort of your living room instead of a stark, industrial recording studio. Even better if it is far from the record executives, lawyers, and corporate-types in New York and Los Angeles.
It’s easy to see how Sausalito’s Record Plant immediately became a destination for the top musicians in the world. Plus, they made a splash for the opening in October 1972. They threw a Halloween party, with invitations on slabs of redwood (resembling the front of the building) and numerous famous guests (including John Lennon and Yoko Ono dressed as trees).
50 years ago to this day, Fleetwood Mac was at the studio working on what would become the sixth best selling album of all time:
Fleetwood Mac’s album Rumours
What exactly were they doing on this day 50 years ago? Engineer and producer Ken Caillat in the foreword of Record Plant, Sausalito Studios:
At that time, Sausalito Record Plant consisted of two identical studios: A and B. We would spend until April 11 recording all 11 songs of Rumours. Initially, [the studio manager] had assigned Studio A for the band to record in, but about halfway through the recording, the band asked to be moved to Studio B for a change of pace, so at midnight on March 1, 1976, the roadies and the studio crew packed everything up and we moved over to Studio B, and on March 2, we continued our work on "Dreams."
That’s right, none other than the band’s top song, which Stevie Nicks wrote at the Record Plant in about 10 minutes just a day or two before. Isn’t Marin History amazing!
ps. Thank you to Katiana Giacona for giving me a copy of her book Record Plant, Sausalito Studios. This gem jumped off the page in the foreword since it is 50 years ago to the day, but I’m excited to learn about all the great artists over the years.
pps. Shout out to my wife Allison, who is the biggest Stevie Nicks fan around.

$3M Famed Landscape Architect’s Home in Mill Valley

If you like mid-century modern, boy do I have the home to show you!
Designed by architect Joseph Stein to be the personal home of famed landscape architect Robert Royston, who obviously set up a beautiful landscape on the nearly one acre lot with views of Mount Tam.
It is listed at $3M, but I believe it is really difficult to predict how much it will sell for. This is the first time it will ever be sold since it was built in 1947! Based on the location and square footage, Zillow estimated it at $2M at the start of the year. But can you imagine a couple of bidders falling in love with this place?
