Dinner Clubs
Here’s a fun idea. A way to get us together, meet new friends and try out new restaurants. What do you think about a Marin Buzz Dinner Club where we get matched with five strangers and assigned a restaurant based on our preferences? Then have a party afterwards with all the groups.
Let me know what you think, if you approve, I’ll start setting this up for after the holidays.
Want to join the Dinner Club?

Huey Lewis and the News was a big deal. They aren’t played as much today, so you might not know it, but their album Sports was the 2nd best of 1984.
It even hit #1 for a week, between runs of Thriller, Footloose, Born in the U.S.A. and Purple Rain.
And as you may know, the album cover photo was taken at Mill Valley’s 2 AM Club. But here is a bunch of interesting stuff you may not know…

Notice the toilet seat guitar just above Huey’s head? We might have to do a whole article on it…
Huey grew up in Marin, which certainly sound idyllic. But great art is often born of tragedy, and it lurks in Huey’s story as well:
“My parents were bohemians. My mother was wild. She was born in Poland and escaped during the war. When my grandparents came to America they had a real tough time. They were wealthy in Poland and here they were discriminated against and not very rich. They committed suicide together and in that moment my mom became a bohemian. She was probably, if not the first hippie in San Francisco, one of the very first hippies, took LSD and hung out with Timothy Leary, Ken Kesey and Allen Ginsberg – all these people in this blossoming beatnik hippie scene in Sausalito. My dad didn’t like all the drugs so he convinced me that I should go away to prep school at the ripe old age of 12.”
He talks a bit more about his mother’s addiction to aesthetics and art in this interview as well. She created everything in their environment, even the upholstery on the family furniture.
Huey Lewis had an interesting upbringing in Marin. His mother would frequent the No Name Bar in Sausalito, which was a destination for jazz musicians, writers, and philosophers. There she met and developed a relationship with Beat poet Lew Welch.
This brought the Beat Generation and lifestyle right into Huey’s living room. Imagine the voices of poets like Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, and Robert Creeley reciting verse around the coffee table.
Also noteworthy to Huey’s future music career, his mother purchased a house in Marin City with the explicit intention of "reintegrating" the neighborhood. For a white family to move into Marin City during the height of the Civil Rights movement was a significant social statement.
As mentioned in the quote above, Huey Lewis went to prep school. What it must have been like going from the rigid East Coast boarding school environment to returning home to Marin during the Summer of Love!
That’s all we have time for today, but let me know if you want a part two about Huey Lewis’s first harmonica, his father encouraging him to busk and hitchhike across Europe before starting at an Ivy League university, and his entrance into the music scene.
This was inspired by the update this week about the Silver Peso. I called the Peso the best dive bar in Marin, but the Deuce receives plenty of votes too.

Tiburon custom home for $3.3M
This property was built over 50 years ago and this is the first time it is hitting the market. You better scoop it up now or you might have to wait another 50 years!
It’s just a 1 mile walk down to the restaurants on main street, I love this location:

For being so close to civilization, this is also a private location. It is at the end of a narrow road with open space beyond. I love the huge windows that look out to the Bay.
This isn’t a small place either at 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and 3,171 square feet. It is 3 floors, I believe you park up top:

Perhaps it requires a little work, otherwise this seems like a screaming deal. What do you think?
