Platform and Springboard Diving in Marin for Youth and Adults

Dive Lab, founded in 2021 by former champion diver and licensed therapist Miranda Maas, is a nonprofit diving program based at the Indian Valley Campus/College of Marin. Built on a holistic philosophy that prioritizes personal growth over podiums, Dive Lab blends diving, mindfulness, strength training, and even circus skills to create confident, healthy athletes. Serving participants ages 6 to 77, the program fosters community, resilience, and joy in and out of the pool.

90 years ago, the “No Trespassing” signs came down at the Kent estate.

The 800-acre grounds of the wealthy family represented some fascinating juxtapositions:

  • Rural woodlands with extravagant wealth.

  • Massive public generosity (donating the land for Muir Woods to the U.S. government) with strictly guarded private access to their residential holdings.

  • Depression-era tent cities with the most beautiful places on the California coast (including at Steep Ravine, which was owned by the Kents).

The heirs of the family, now two generations removed from the massive Chicago meatpacking fortune, faced the cold reality of estate taxes and family debt. This forced them to sell their land and create the subdivision of Kent Woodlands in 1936.

Instead of just selling raw land, they sold a lifestyle, one lot at a time. They offered custom luxury homes by elite architects that could "disappear" into the oaks. It was the start of the indoor-outdoor living style we now take for granted here.

In order to help buyers visualize the potential, the Kents even built a model home in the flats that recently sold for $6M:

The Kent Woodlands were sold over the course of decades and 21 different subdivisions. Each phase moved higher up the ridges of Mt. Tam and became more expensive and difficult to build.

Today, there are over 500 homes and 1,700 people who live within the Kent Woodlands boundary (about 25% of Kentfield’s population).

You could argue 1936, with the Kent Woodlands subdivision, and 1937, with the Golden Gate Bridge opening, were the start of modern Marin.

p.s. If you feel bad about not living in a Kentfield mansion, don’t worry. Kentfield gets 44-48 inches per year, compared to 20-24 inches a couple of miles away in Greenbrae. This is due to a “topography‑driven micro‑climate created by Mt. Tam. Kentfield sits on the first upslope where winter storms meet, so the moist air has to rise and cool right overhead, wringing out a lot of rain.” That’s even more rain than Seattle, which gets 37-39 inches!

$12M New Mansion in Kent Woodlands

This looks like something you’d see in a movie set in the Hollywood Hills. But instead of looking out at smog, this home has an amazing view of Mt. Tam.

It’s rare to have such a new and huge home in this area of Marin. 6 bedrooms, 6 full bathrooms, 2 half bathrooms, 6,690 square feet. Basically, so big you might get lost.

The Zillow history shows it was sold in 2016 for $2.2M. That was likely a tear-down of the original 1950s or 60s home that was a higher-elevation Kent Woodlands subdivision built much later. Now the property is listed as built in 2022, “designed by Hatfield Architecture and Dumican Mosey Studio.”

Ok, you love it, now what? If you put $2.4M down, your monthly payment is $75k. Yowza!
