Welcome new subscribers! On Monday afternoons we do several small features, including Marin History. On Wednesday morning, by the time you wake up, you’ll have the events and activities email.

Rooted in Experience. Built on Integrity.

Since 1985, Marin County Arborists has delivered expert tree care with a deep respect for both people and the environment. Founded by Mill Valley native and ISA Certified Arborist Ken Bovero, our family-owned business blends decades of hands-on experience with modern arboricultural science.

From careful pruning and hazardous removals to large-scale habitat restoration, every project is approached with craftsmanship, precision, and care. Serving residential, commercial, and municipal clients throughout the Bay Area, we treat every tree as a vital investment in safety, beauty, and ecological health.

There was a small boy from Greenbrae who arrived at Redwood High School wanting to play football. However, he was so tiny, they actually required a doctor’s note to let him play against everyone much bigger than him. He weighed just 110 pounds.

He would continue to grow and become a star, not just for Redwood, but also the excellent College of Marin football team. Over 40 years later, this man would win a Super Bowl as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks.

Pete Carroll is instantly recognizable, from the silver hair to the high energy gum chewing on the sidelines. And since he is largely associated with some teams that are fairly despised here in Marin (USC and the Seahawks), most people don’t know that he grew up in Marin. Or if they do know, choose not to take credit…

Although he excelled at several sports at Redwood, given his small stature, the big college programs weren’t calling when he graduated in 1969. So he went about a mile down the road to the College of Marin.

You might not know it today, since COM hasn’t had a football team since 2008, but it was a standout team at the time. In 1970 the team won its first-ever division title with Pete playing defensive safety (he would have 12 interceptions across 2 years).

Unfortunately in 2003 the COM team would start a 51 game losing streak, with only 1 win the next 5 years before the program shut down. The football team was losing money at the same time the school was investing in a massive modernization, including the Science, Math, and Nursing Building.

pps. The Pieper Stadium that is currently at COM is significantly different than when the football team was playing. There were grandstands and a press box, whereas now it is a bleacher-less track and field. It was removed around 2008 in the campus renovation.

$7k/mo Unique Rental in Marin Headlands

This is a tiny rental that is all windows and looks like you are in the Marin Headlands. They didn’t disclose the exact location, but I believe it is around here:

I had no idea there are 40-60 homes on the west side of 101 there. It looks like an incredible view and the pictures make it seem pretty remote, although that might just be clever photography. But even if you are by other neighbors, the access to the Marin Headlands trails right out your door is awesome.

The minimum rental is a month, with longer stays possible. $7k for 600 square feet is steep, but then again, this would be a pretty memorable month. What do you think?

The Next Dinner Club Poll

This week is our 2nd Dinner Club in Mill Valley. We are going to keep experimenting with this event format and would love to hear your thoughts on a couple ideas for the next one. (The quick overview of the format is a personality quiz, then we assign you a table with 5 strangers and tell you your restaurant the morning of, optional afterparty with all the tables after.)

Spread Out Dinner Club Cities

We are considering trying 2-3 smaller Dinner Clubs on the same night, more spread out across Marin. Which location would you join if offered?

Next Dinner Club Date

More are likely to join on Thursdays, but the restaurants and bars are more crowded, so there might be worse service for a big group. Which would you prefer?
