James Dunn returned home from working late into the night as the head of the College of Marin Drama Department. He was so excited that he awoke his wife to immediately tell her:

“You will not believe what I have just seen,” he told her. “This young man is going to be somebody one day.”

That young man was a 19-year-old Robin Williams in 1971. What did he do that was so amazing?

Robin Williams at 26-years-old

Robin was in his first year at the College of Marin in Kentfield. James Dunn had cast him as Fagin, the leader of the pickpockets in Oliver! (the musical version of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist). Fagin is a theatrical, somewhat comedic character that gave Robin Williams an opportunity to show his brilliance.

On that fateful night of play practice, Robin was rehearsing a scene where Fagin is counting his treasures. Robin began to improvise wildly, using the props in ways that were hilariously unexpected. And as the entire cast was cracking up, Robin just kept going, keeping them in hysterics for minutes.

However, discovering the unique talents of Robin Williams isn’t all James Dunn did. He also imparted his wisdom, passion, and rigorous approach to acting on his students. Dunn had a no-nonsense manner as a Korean War veteran.

Robin Williams later was quoted by SFGate as saying about Dunn, “The abuse started early, but you could see, when you started to get it, he took great pride in that. He’s one of those teachers that comes at it with a great deal of passion, almost like that ‘Dead Poets’ teacher. He’s about putting everything into it, your mind, your body, your soul. Give it your all.”

p.s. I couldn’t find any footage of Robin’s plays while at COM. However, there is this very rough footage from 1976. This was after he left Juilliard, was working as a busboy at The Trident in Sausalito, and performing stand-up at the Holy City Zoo in San Francisco.

p.p.s. James Dunn was a longtime director of the Mountain Play. After a one year break, the play is back this June performing the Wizard of Oz and tickets are on sale now.

$1.65M Getaway on Mt. Tam

There’s a lot to love about this place that just hit the market two days ago. First, the massive windows that give the feeling of living along the treetops.

It was built in 1978, but has been upgraded throughout: custom cabinets, granite countertops, Viking appliances, solar with battery backup, heat pump and AC, and EV charging.

I also appreciate that it feels like a mountain home. Wood paneling in sections, but not too much. In other areas it has white walls and wooden beams.

Dibs this bedroom:

Plus, there is a massive deck with a hot tub, sauna, and outdoor shower. Perfect for getting out on the mountain and coming home to relax.
