We Are Throwing a Marin Buzz Party!

When the Trident shut down unexpectedly, people were rightfully disappointed. That led us to find out about the event space right upstairs, and yada, yada, yada, we are renting it out for a big party Saturday, January 31st!

There is a lot more detail in our Instagram post announcing it and you can grab tickets here. Hope to see you there!

It sounds like the plot of a 90s teen movie. One epic house party that launches you into the “in” crowd and the rest is history.

May 22, 1966 the Grateful Dead threw a psychedelic party in Novato. They jammed for hours on end with the members of Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and anyone else who wanted to join. Meanwhile the pool was crammed, clothing optional.

This was before the 1967 “Summer of Love” and the Grateful Dead establishing themselves in Haight-Ashbury. They were not yet rock stars, just a band trying new things.

For six weeks, the band leased the Olompali estate at the north end of Novato. They found complete freedom, being able to play at full volume day and night. They would look back at this time as instrumental in their musical evolution and bond.

The house itself was as unique as their psychedelic rock music. It was an old 26 room Victorian mansion set on 700-acres. Sure, those are big numbers, but that’s not the crazy part. Inside the walls were adobe brick walls of the Coast Miwok leader’s home from the 1840s. The Olompali mansion literally encased the original walls.

This connection to the past was part of the charm of the communal living for the Grateful Dead. In fact, they made a flyer that read: “THE GRATEFUL DEAD INVITE YOU TO AN AFTERNOON OF INTER-GALACTIC TRAVEL, TO A COMMUNION WITH THE SPIRITS OF LONG DEAD INDIANS, TO A DANCE CELEBRATING MAINLY ALL OF US.”

The author Ken Kesey, famous for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, is reported to have said “The Summer of Love began one afternoon in Olompali.” (His group of friends, known as the Merry Pranksters, were present at this party and many other historic Bay Area events in this time period.)

The Grateful Dead would move to Lagunitas for a few months, then on to 710 Ashbury Street, San Francisco in September 1966. And the rest is history!

$2M Fixer-Upper in Kentfield

This looks like something you’d see on the East Coast, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen something quite like this in Marin.

The long driveway with significant overgrowth. Red brick decks with wood shingle siding. Even the pool deck is red brick. (Have you ever been sucked into the pressure washing Youtube vortex? This property is a pressure washer’s dream.)

Look at the walls in the bathroom above and in this room:

So bold and full of character! Unfortunately, whoever is brave enough to embark on this remodel project with a large property in an excellent location, you know the result will be much more bland.

I’ll be curious to see what this ends up selling for and if it is a flip.
