Every June, hundreds of brave souls tackle the Dipsea Race, a 7.5-mile gauntlet from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach.
The first race was in 1905, making it by far the oldest trail race in America. You might even call it a stair race: there are 680 in the first mile!
It starts out in Mill Valley with a steep climb, drops into Muir Woods, rises over the shoulder of Mt. Tam, and finally descends to the ocean. It’s a stunning journey before you collapse in the sand.
The race is also famous for its quirky handicapping system: older runners and women get a head start. This results in a lot of passing on the stairs. (I’d start 2 minutes early and quickly get passed by the old experienced runners starting later!)
