I love a good nickname.
It’s just fun. Endearing. Or I guess it could be cruel. But I’m talking about the positive type of nicknames…
A great one is The People’s _______. For example, The People’s Champion (Muhammad Ali and later The Rock). But did you know someone is referred to as The People’s Author?
Anne Lamott is the person and she lives right here in Marin County. Who is she and how did she earn this nickname?
Thirty years ago my older brother, who was ten years old at the time, was trying to get a report on birds written that he’d had three months to write. It was due the next day. We were out at our family cabin in Bolinas, and he was at the kitchen table close to tears, surrounded by binder paper and pencils and unopened books on birds, immobilized by the hugeness of the task ahead. Then my father sat down beside him, put his arm around my brother’s shoulder, and said, ‘Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.’
The book is a classic because of Anne’s storytelling and humor. It is one of those that is wonderful even if you aren’t a writer. Highly recommend if you have the tendency to let perfection get in the way of a goal (“perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people”).
How did she earn the nickname? Not really too clear, I guess just because she is the voice for authors and so likable. The book was a hit in 1994, then in 1999 a documentary was released as well:
More than 30 years since the book’s release, it is still as present as ever in pop culture. There were numerous references to the book on the hit show Ted Lasso, and Anne was interviewed on the massive Tim Ferriss podcast.
